How Computers Protect United States Troops in Battle

In today’s wars, military technologies determine the outcome of most battles. Because of this, ground troops in battle not only find themselves needing guns and other weapons to stay alive but also various types of computers to help defeat the enemy. With undoubtedly the greatest military force in the world, the United States leads the way when it comes to using computer technology to keep troops safe in battle. However, since technology is changing at such a rapid pace, you may not be aware of the latest ways troops utilize technology on the battlefield.

Of all the advances in military technologies over the past decade, perhaps none have had a more dramatic impact on ground troops than drones. Used primarily for surveillance and to evaluate troop positions on the ground relative to where the enemy is located, drones were initially able to be used only in daylight hours. However, virtually all drones today are equipped with thermal and night vision equipment, allowing them to continue operations in the darkness. In fact, drone technology has improved so much that they are now able to perform many missions previously performed by airplanes or helicopters. But since drones are unmanned, they are able to keep numerous troops out of harm’s way.

Situational Awareness Systems 

Used extensively with battlefield computers and ordnance loading, high-tech situational awareness systems have numerous advantages. Because they are used in combat and tactical vehicles, they rely on a variety of military power supplies such as inverters, converters, and other equipment to provide reliability and accuracy in the harshest of environments. Known as a modular build your own system computer, these systems allow users to operate and access many different software applications on a single piece of hardware. In addition, these systems make use of tablets that have been specially modified for battlefield operations, allowing them to operate on 25-foot cables so that soldiers inside a vehicle can pass the tablet around or detach it and take it outside.

Wearable Computers 

Sounding like science-fiction, wearable computers are advanced technology systems that make good use of numerous types of military power management solutions. Utilizing technology similar to that found in Google Glass, soldiers can wear these high-tech helmet-mounted displays to perform a wide variety of functions. For example, soldiers in the field will be able to identify hostile and friendly forces, along with coordinating small-unit operations. Expected to minimize or eliminate friendly-fire incidents, the systems can also let ground troops view troop positions, maps, alerts, and coordinate air support and other operations by having real-time information overlayed on their viewing area. Another wearable computer system currently in use is the Advanced Warfighter Awareness Real-Time Engagement System, which consists of a chest-mounted computer, monocle, and smartphone attached to a soldier’s wrist. The helmet-mounted monocle, which is see-through yet covers the whole eye, allows a soldier to call in airstrikes simply by viewing it through the eyepiece and clicking the smartphone screen. 

Bomb Detection 

While in years past soldiers had to go into harm’s way to find and defuse bombs, today’s computer technology now allows this task to be left to robots. Rather than putting the soldier directly with the bomb, humans can instead act as operators and guide robotic systems to a bomb, where it can be detected and disabled. In some situations, soldiers can use robotic systems equipped with artificial intelligence that can evaluate situations on their own and require little if any help from a human operator, making the task of bomb detection and neutralization safer and more efficient.


 Army Battle Command System 

Consisting of mobile and fixed networks, the Army Battle Command System is made to operate with similar systems from other nations to help soldiers view supply movements, receive and evaluate intelligence, view airspace, interpret weather reports, and more. Using a map-based display, it provides up-to-date logistical information and allows for electronic messaging and data exchange with the Army Battle Command System and Movement Tracking System. In addition, it allows soldiers to access the internet no matter where they may be at the time, enabling them to view important information. Using a variety of military power supplies such as converters, transformers, and other pieces, the ABCS integrates with other systems while letting a soldier view multiple systems on one screen. By having this feature, soldiers can pass data from one system to the next and assure themselves of always having real-time information about multiple aspects of the battle.

With military technology continuing to make great strides in numerous areas, soldiers will be able to perform even more amazing tasks while engaged in battle. Whether it’s assessing enemy positions to call in airstrikes or guiding a robot to defuse a bomb, today’s military power management solutions continue to protect our troops in new and innovative ways.
